Red Hat is rethinking how the automobile industry updates software in cars; we are adding wheels to the world's leading enterprise Linux platform. 

The Red Hat Engineering team is looking for a Software Engineering Manager to join us. In this role, you'll manage a globally-distributed team of engineers and architects, working closely with product managers, program managers, agile practitioners, and community members to create Red Hat's first ever offering of Linux in cars. This is a new venture with a lot to discover. You will be a member of an engineering team that embraces psychological safety, enabling every team member to contribute to team success. The team will focus on the engineering activities underpinning functional safety certification. Your knowledge and experience conducting (automotive) functional safety certification will be extremely valuable. The majority of the team is based in Central Europe and the work location for this position is flexible; Red Hat has offices throughout Europe, the United States, and Canada, and home-based, remote candidates in countries where Red Hat is registered to do business will also be considered.

What you will do

  • Interact daily with a cross functional team of Functional Safety developers and quality engineers, and engage with all aspects of people management
  • Support the career development of engineers on the team
  • Work with individual technical leads, management, and product owners to plan and track the team's work, report on progress in planning and review meetings, and help the team to reach technical consensus
  • Interact with peer engineering groups within Red Hat to ensure releases of the operating system are Functional Safety certified
  • Coordinate work at a high level with the internal quality engineering, documentation, and release management teams
  • Represent the team at functional meetings, conferences, customer, and partner discussions

What you will bring

  • Leadership experience through direct people management, team lead activities, or project management
  • Flexibility to work with a globally distributed and remote team
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, balance priorities and multiple schedules
  • Solid written and verbal English communication skills
  • Background in computer software development or software service delivery
  • Previous experience in defining technical safety concepts, software safety requirements
  • Previous experience in conducting safety analyses on software products or components 
  • Previous experience with  verification activities for ISO26262 certification
  • Experience with agile software development process, focused on short development cycles with demonstrable progress, and continuous planning with a team of peers

The following are considered a plus

  • Familiarity with Linux
  • Proven record of handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and working under pressure
  • Troubleshooting skills with a passion for problem-solving, investigation, and learning new technologies
  • Familiarity with open source software and community interaction
  • Working knowledge of how a Linux distribution is built
  • Degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a technology-related discipline
  • Involvement with the definition of ISO26262 or other safety industry standards
  • Experience with continuous integration (CI) or continuous delivery (CD)
  • Involvement in open source communities and understanding of how open source and free software communities work
