Job summary

The Red Hat Linux Engineering Virtualization team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join us and work on the team which develops and maintains components of the KVM stack. In this role, you'll be part of the team responsible for components related to file-systems and storage used in our open source virtualization stack. You will be part of a larger group that cross-collaborates to implement, maintain and deliver--in partnership with open source communities--system-level virtualization features. Your contributions will be used to power products like Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, Red Hat Virtualization, Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). The work location for this position is flexible, with Europe being the preferred region due to timezone constraints. Red Hat has offices in many cities and home-based, remote candidates are welcome to apply, as long as they reside in a region where Red Hat is registered to do business.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Work as part of a distributed team with several remote team members
  • Design, implement new features and fix bugs in open source projects like virtio-fs, QEMU, and virtio
  • Review patches and provide feedback to community-oriented enhancements and bug fixes
  • Contribute automated tests to continuous integration (CI) systems

Required skills

  • Experience with system-level programming in C or Rust
  • Good understanding of operating system and computer architecture: filesystems, caching systems, performance evaluation, block-storage, etc.
  • Good written and verbal English language skills

The following are considered a plus:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent
  • Familiarity with multiple programming languages.
  • Understanding of open source development processes or active open source contributions
  • Familiarity with the Linux virtualization stack (KVM)
  • Experience with system-level software engineering in a professional environment or as a hobby
  • Passionate about low-level components of an operating system
  • Comfortable debugging stack traces and reading hardware specifications or standards
  • Ability to learn about new technologies and open to receiving mentoring from experienced engineers
